Judge strikes down entire new health-care law... →
Uh, I’m sorry, what? The government makes you do lots of things! I realize auto insurance is a lousy example because you can choose not to drive a car, but can’t choose not to drive a body, but that mandate is legal! So are taxes, i.e. making you pay for stuff that serves the greater good, much like paying for health-care will serve public health on the whole! Also, you can pay a fine...

Grant report completed!
This was the last piece of work that absolutely had to get finished by tomorrow, and my date for the night fell through ‘cause I got caught up with work and she got caught up with some sort of root vegetable, so what do we think is left on the docket for tonight? Drafting a press release? Tackling my increasingly-foreboding sink full of dishes? Finishing revisions on creative and critical...

Madre: I lay down the law with your sister yesterday, "No Sex Under My Roof" is now an official rule.
Moi: Totally reasonable!
Madre: And now that it's been made official, if I catch that kid at it, she is quite literally fucked.
Moi: I think you mean, "quite figuratively fucked."
Madre: ... yes.

Add this to the list of totally legitimate reasons I hate professional football. These folks just jumped the shark from “regularly running ads that demean women and address men like neanderthals” to “making major investments in demeaning women to allow men to behave like neanderthals.” In other news, the economy is back to pre-recession levels, but jobs are still lagging...

Weekend!
By which I mean, the two days in which I have to finish a grant report, train myself to be a tutor because ain’t nobody else gonna do it apparently (and then tutor a bunch), spend 6 hours in a war room, prepare and circulate a huge press release, and prepare for a car trip down to Annapolis, MD on Monday. I don’t think I’m actually complaining on most counts, but I am actually...

Va senator seeks study on castrating sex offenders →
As a person who has spent a considerable amount of time around Virginians (mostly regular-type), I’m going to take the unpopular position that this might not be a bad idea. (Physical castration, which is what they’re suggesting, is actually TOTALLY NOT OK, jokes aside. The state controlling use of your body = questionable at best, ever; doing so permanently is unconscionable. On the...

Vitality of Arts Sector Hit Twelve-Year Low in... →
This is horrific. 41% of arts organizations couldn’t balance their budgets in 2008, and that’s before the recession “ended.” There are 2.2 million working artists in the US, and the percentage of all philanthropic giving going to the arts has dropped by almost 20% over the past decade. There’s a reason artists are starving. We need to feed them. Us. Feed us.

▶ Jurassic Park Theme (1000% Slower) by birdfeeder →
Um… this is incredibly moving, and great writing music. Also reminds me of this one time Di and I had a picnic at the Botanical Gardens in Skokie, and passed a little boy who was humming the Jurassic Park theme to himself, over and over. It was priceless and exactly the right response to carefully manicured landscaping.

Oh honey, complete? As if he were not already there? There is a possibility in my mind that this will mean he will actually have to shimmy Left to find the “Center” again.
