I, too, dislike it.
Some conservatives have been pushing the argument that Section 5 is no longer constitutional, because the states subject to preclearance don’t present a special danger of racial discrimination. In 2009, the Supreme Court strongly signaled that this crown jewel of the civil rights movement may no longer be constitutional because of its interference with states’ rights.

The Obama Administration’s Risky Voter ID Move Threatens the Voting Rights Act - Slate Magazine

Anyone who honestly believes that Southern states don’t present a special danger of voter interference against minorities has not visited a Southern state.

Voter ID laws constitute some of the most detestable legalized racism still out there. Here’s hoping Obama has the balls and clout to do something about it.

Einolf said many of the other books neglect key elements, such as the role of African Americans in 19th-century Virginia.

Some Va. history texts filled with errors, review finds

Some of the other errors seem relatively immaterial (dates being off by a year or two — only vitally important if you’re writing a cross-cultural study on a very specific period of time, I’d argue), but neglecting to mention THE ENTIRE PRESENCE AND HISTORY OF BLACK PEOPLE FOR AN ENTIRE CENTURY?? A century prior to the civil war, when several of those shining bastions of patriotism known as the Founding Fathers were slave owners? That’s worthy of the word “egregious.”

Today in rocket science: Hate Speech is still not Protected Speech. Score one for Media Matters and all the advertisers who pulled their funding from her show. Too bad that it took an outburst of using the N-word 11 times to get here, rather than a response to decades of constant dog-whistling, disemmination of misinformation and general nastiness. But hey, off the air is off the air, even if the good Doctor is trying to spin this as her big break from being “muzzled” by her funding streams. Sure do love capitalism til it works against you, huh.

And then there’s this. So yeah, I’m feeling more and more sure about that tat. Although I am more than a little baffled by this:

The ADL report, issued Tuesday morning, is somewhat at odds with a report on hate crime issued last week by California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown. That report showed that crimes motivated by anti-Semitism declined in 2009, as did crimes motivated by hatred against other religious and ethnic groups.

Susskind said the ADL was monitoring a much broader range of incidents, many of which are not crimes. She also noted that Brown’s report found that 76% of the hate crimes motivated by religious bias were against Jews. Muslims were next, at 6%.

Although on second thought, I’m sort of inclined to believe it. Discrimination and hate crimes against Muslims is a very comfortable topic for our media to tackle, for whatever reason. Against Jews? Stickier, tied in with Zionism and Palestinians’ Rights and the fact that it’s dangerous to define us as an ethnic group, or even a religious one. Plus if we do run the media to the extent that rumors lead one to believe, we probably are keeping that shit off the front pages. No point in showing our weak spot and fanning the flames.
